Hope Mobility Kenya has partnered with the Kitui County Government to donate 300 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities across the county. The initiative, reported in recent county updates, targets residents who have struggled for years with limited access to assistive devices in a largely rural and semi-arid region.

Officials described the donation as a practical step toward greater inclusion, allowing beneficiaries to reach schools, health facilities, markets and community meetings more easily. County social services teams are coordinating assessments to prioritise those in greatest need, including residents in remote wards such as Tseikuru. Local leaders noted that mobility challenges have long restricted economic participation and social interaction for many PWDs.

The partnership builds on existing county efforts to strengthen support systems under Governor Julius Malombe’s administration. Beneficiaries and disability advocacy groups have welcomed the support, saying reliable wheelchairs reduce isolation and restore dignity. The organisation is also expected to provide basic training on maintenance so the devices remain functional for longer periods. Similar donations in other counties have shown measurable improvements in school attendance and access to livelihood activities. Kitui’s geography, with long distances between settlements and limited public transport, makes personal mobility especially important.
County officials emphasised that the programme aligns with broader goals of leaving no one behind in development. Further collaboration may include follow-up monitoring and additional assistive equipment in future phases. Residents and leaders in Mwingi and surrounding areas have called for sustained investment in disability inclusion. The donation arrives at a time when Kitui continues to balance infrastructure projects, agricultural support and social programmes.

By addressing a basic but critical need, the 300 wheelchairs are expected to produce tangible daily benefits for hundreds of families while encouraging other partners to contribute. Continuous engagement between the county, the donor organisation and community representatives will determine how effectively the devices reach those who need them most and how the impact is measured over the coming months.
